5. Alain Prost
In a golden era for Formula 1 due to the presence of Prost and Ayrton Senna, the French driver did not disappoint in his performance, becoming one of the Formula 1 drivers with the most titles of all time.
Winning in both 1985 and 1986 with McLaren, he was the first in the team’s history to win back-to-back world championships. He would go on to win one more with the same team in 1989, and, after a brief stint with Ferrari, in 1993, in what was his last experience as a driver, he was crowned with Williams-Renault.
4. Sebastian Vettel
Vettel is undoubtedly one of the best drivers of the last decade in Formula 1, as he won his four titles in a row by becoming champion between the 2010-2013 seasons.
The 34-year-old German was unrivaled at the beginning of the decade and managed to set some records on the circuit that will be very difficult to break.
As well as being the second youngest to win a championship, at 23 years of age and 134 days (he was displaced this year by Max Verstappen), no one has managed to come first in more consecutive races than him, when he took nine in 2013, and he shares the top spot for most wins in a single campaign with 13.
3. Juan Manuel Fangio
Fangio was the first great winner of Formula 1 when he won five titles in the 1950s, the same decade that saw the beginning of the world’s top category of car racing.
The Argentine driver managed to become champion five times with four different racing teams: Alfa Romeo (1951), Mercedes-Benz (1954, 1955), Ferrari (1956), and Maserati (1957), besides dodging all the safety vicissitudes that existed at that time and that caused a great number of accidents.
Even though the races much shorter and having much more complicated cars to drive, Fangio always showed his quality by winning 24 of the 51 races in which he participated, in addition to becoming champion at 46 years of age in 1957.
2. Michael Schumacher
For many, he is the best driver of all time, and he certainly has the arguments to be so. Schumacher was for almost two decades the driver with the most titles in the history of Formula 1, winning seven in total.
The German won his first two titles in 1994-1995 with Benetton, but it would be his five consecutive titles with Ferrari, between 2000 and 2004, that would take him to the historical leadership of the category, surpassing Fangio’s five.
During his time with the “Prancing Horse”, Schumacher had an absolute domination of the grid, as shown by the fact that in 2002 he won 11 races and never left the podium that year, while in 2004 he won 13 of the 18 races he raced. He ultimately finished with 91 lifetime wins, which is why he is second only to Hamilton on this list.
1. Lewis Hamilton
Loved by many and hated by many, the British legend has joined in recent years, with great authority and absolute dominance, the discussion of who is the best F1 driver of all time.
Until he was defeated last year by Verstappen, Hamilton was the definitive lord and master of the circuit to the point of equaling Schumacher in titles and surpassing the number of victories that the German achieved, as he reached 103 laurels.
Hamilton won his first world championship in 2008 with McLaren, going on to win six in seven years (2014, 2015, 2017, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) with Mercedes-AMG. And although his future in Formula 1 does not seem to be entirely clear, if he continues to compete, he will most likely keep his top place on this list of Formula 1 drivers with the most titles of all time.
