Betting on the Los Angeles Angels (TBA)
Jaime Barria is scheduled to get the ball and start for the Halos for this series opener. Barria has made just five starts so far this season, but he’s been pretty much solid for the most part of the year whether he is starting or coming out of the bullpen. He got roughed up in his last start by the Chicago White Sox, though, as he gave up five earned runs on seven hits in just three innings of an 11-5 home loss last Wednesday.
The good thing about here for Barria is that he’s carrying respectable numbers when he’s toeing the rubber away from Anaheim. In fact, Barria has a 2.73 ERA in road appearances this season, thus far. The Angels have also won in each of Barria’s last three appearances away from home. With superstars Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout backing him up, Barria should feel confident against the Padres. Ohtani is 2-for-3 in his career against Blake Snell.
Starting pitcher: Jaime Barria (2-3, 2.92 ERA)
Betting on the San Diego Padres (TBA)
While the Angels will have a reliever temporarily acting as a starter for them later tonight, the Padres will send a former Cy Young winner to the mound to face the Halos. That would be Blake Snell, who will be making his first start in July. He is coming off a scorching month of June, during which he went 3-1 with a floor-scraping 0.87 ERA across five starts.
In his most recent start, Snell allowed two earned runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts in six innings of a 7-1 road loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates last Wednesday. Nevertheless, he has been at the top of his game over his last several starts. Snell has struck out at least 10 batters in each of his last four starts. Out to help Snell is the Padres’ offense that features Xander Bogaerts, who is 2-for-4 in his career against Barria. There’s also veteran Nelson Cruz, who is 4-for-9 with two home runs in the same matchup.
Starting pitcher: Blake Snell (4-7, 3.21 ERA)
El Jefe’s Prediction on Los Angeles Angels vs San Diego Padres
Although the Angels have the pair of Trout and Ohtani, it’s still easier to rely on for a better performance overall from the Padres, with a proven and scorching starter on the mound for them in the form of Snell. San Diego takes the win in this game.
Prediction:
The Padres win, 7-4.
