The Cubs failed to complete a sweep of the mighty Tampa Bay Rays, as they lost a close one to the American League East division team on Wednesday, 4-3. Nevertheless, Chicago must feel good that it was able to come away with two wins in that three-game series against a legitimately good club.
The Cubs will parade James Taillon on the mound for this series opener against the Padres. Taillon isn’t having plenty of success this season, but there’s still hope that he can deliver the goods on the mound for Chicago, which has won 19 of its last seven Game 1s of a series. For one, San Diego players only have a .260 wOBA and .284 xWOBA along with just a .205 batting average over 76 total plate appearances against Taillon.
Starting pitcher: Jameson Taillon (0-3, 8.04 ERA)
Betting on the San Diego Padres
- Season record 2023: 25-30
- Moneyline: (-155)
- Run Line: (-1.5, +130)
- Over/Under: (8.8)

The Padres absolutely smashed the Miami Marlins in series finale on Thursday, coming away with a 10-1 victory to get back on track. That’s the type of offense Michael Wacha will be salivating to see when he starts this Friday against the Cubs at home. Wacha had an impressive May. In that month, he went 3-0 with a 0.84 ERA over the course of five starts. In his last mound appearance, Wacha allowed just two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts in seven innings, albeit in a 3-2 loss to the New York Yankees on the road last Saturday.
Ha-SeongKim, who went 1-for-4 with two runs in the Marlins game has not hit .286 over his last five games. Fernando Tatis Jr. will look to bring his form into this series opener against the Cubs after going 3-for-4 with four RBI against Miami.
Starting pitcher: Michael Wacha (5-1, 3.45 ERA)
JefeBet Prediction
The Padres’ bats remain hot as they torch Taillon early. It’s just hard to trust right now, considering he has allowed at least four earned runs in each of his last four starts.
Prediction: The Padres win, 6-3.
