The Dodgers got crushed in the first part of this four-game series against St. Louis, as they lost to the Cards Thursday, 16-8. Julio Urias got roasted hard by Cardinals hitters, so hopefully for the Dodgers, St. Louis has sort of used up most of its luck on offense.
Stepping on the mound for the Dodgers in Game 2 is Tony Gonsolin, who will be making just his fifth start of the season. In three starts this month, Gonsolin has been very reliable, going 1-1 with a 1.72 ERA across 15.2 innings since the calendar flipped to May. In 36 total plate appearances of current Dodgers hitters against Gonsolin, they have only mustered a 0.304 xWOBA along with a high 33.3 percent strikeout rate. On offense, Freddie Freeman has been terrific this month, as he carries a .348 batting average with four home runs already this May.
Starting pitcher: Tony Gonsolin (1-1, 1.42 ERA)
Betting on the St. Louis Cardinals
- Season record 2023: 19-26

- Over/Under: (8.5)

The Cardinals absolutely lit up Los Angeles’ pitching in the series opener, with St. Louis hitting a total of seven home runs in that game. Willson Contreras and Nolan Goorman each hit a pair of home runs in Game 1, while Paul DeJong, Nolan Arenado, and Juan Yepez each had a home run.
That feast of home runs pushed the Cardinals up to the fifth place in the majors in homers, as they have now sent 65 balls out of the park. The Cardinals are also leading all teams in the majors this May as of Thursday in runs with 106 – they are the only team with more than 99 in that period. Steven Matz feels confident that he can benefit from that kind of offense when gets the ball later tonight. Matz is winless this season, though, the Cardinals have won in each of his last two starts.
Starting pitcher: Steven Matz (0-4, 5.62 ERA)
JefeBet Prediction
Gonsolin will be much steadier on the mound than Urias was on Thursday. It’s also high time for the Cards to cool off offensively following an unreal performance at the plate in the first game of the series.
Prediction: The Dodgers win, 4-2.
