Although he’s not exactly pitching like the old version of himself this season, Verlander is still a pitcher that teams can’t take lightly – ever. Verlander is also coming off perhaps his best start so far in Mets uniform, as he held the San Francisco Giants scoreless and allowed only a hit in 7.0 innings of action in a 4-1 victory at home last Saturday. Over Verlander’s last two starts, he surrendered zero earned runs and just 10 hits across 12.0 innings.
The Mets can also turn to their offense to make things easier for Verlander. Starling Marte is a career .400 hitter against Padres potential starter Yu Darvish, while Francisco Lindor is batting .250 with four RBIs in the same matchup. Daniel Vogelbach is 3-for-8 with a pair of RBIs against Darvish all-time.

Darvish is said to be potentially available to start against the Mets this Friday. An unspecified illness has taken Darvish down but appears to be making some progress, enough to keep hopes alive that he’ll be out on the mound before the end of the first half of the season.
In any case, the Padres’ offense will pose a big threat to Verlander and the Mets.
The Padres are coming off a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels at home in which they outscored the Halos, 23-11. Juan Soto has hit .333 in his last 14 games, while Ha-Seong Kim has posted a .269 batting average with five home runs over the same stretch. Meanwhile, Manny Machado has slashed .300/.364/.600 with three home runs and eight RBIs in his last 30 at-bats.
