Betting on the New York Mets (TBA)
It’s going to be future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer getting the starting duties for the Mets in this series finale this Sunday. Scherzer picked up a win in his last start despite a shaky performance, allowing four earned runs on five hits (three home runs) with nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings of an 8-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 4. Scherzer and the Mets should feel comfortable with Mad Max on the mound. For one, Scherzer has limited the entire current roster of the Mets to just a lifetime .163 collective batting average. Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. are just a combined 2-for-21 with eight strikeouts all-time against Scherzer.
Meanwhile, Francisco Alvarez, who has been smoking hot of late will look to add to his first-half totals. He has hit .435 with four home runs and eight RBIs in his last six games.
Starting pitcher: Max Scherzer (8-2, 4.03 ERA)
Betting on the San Diego Padres (TBA)
Joe Musgrove has been among the best pitchers of late, and he’s going to be dueling with Scherzer this Sunday in hopes of helping the Padres close out the first half with a nice victory. Musgrove has not allowed more than two earned runs in each of his last four starts and in seven of his last eight. Over his last five starts, Musgrove has gone 4-0 with a 2.53 ERA and with only two home runs surrendered.
Although Scherzer has documented success against current Padres hitters, he will be entering this game at Petco Park with just a 4.55 ERA in nine 10 road starts this season. Tatis leads all qualified Padres hitters with a .989 OPS at home, while Soto is behind him with an .831 OPS at Petco Park this season, thus far.
Starting pitcher: Joe Musgrove (7-2, 3.56 ERA)
El Jefe’s Prediction on New York Mets vs San Diego Padres
Scherzer has a 6-2 record in road starts this season despite a high ERA in those games, thanks in large part to the Mets’ offense. But with Musgrove on the mound, Scherzer will have to be better. Picking the Padres to win this game.
Prediction:
The Padres win, 4-2.
