Betting on the Washington Nationals (+185)
The Nationals are going to hope that the man they send to the mound later tonight will lift them up. That would be Josiah Gray, who has been winless in four starts so far this month. He is 0-1 with a 6.04 ERA over the course of 22.1 innings in June. In his last start, he allowed six earned runs on nine hits in an 8-6 home loss to the St. Louis Cardinals last Monday. However, he did have six strikeouts in that contest.
Most of his struggles this season have come at home, though, where is hs just 2-3 with a 5.17 ERA in six starts. On the road? He’s better. While he is also just 2-3 in starts away from home Gray has a 2.73 ERA in nine road starts and opponents are hitting just .236 against him in that setting, lower than .269 when he’s pitching at home. The Nationals will be playing against San Diego’s Matt Waldron, who will be making his big-league debut. They have the chance to give him a rude welcome to the majors.
Starting pitcher: Josiah Gray (4-6, 3.64 ERA)
Betting on the San Diego Padres (-215)
As mentioned earlier, the Padres will be starting a new guy on the mound later tonight. Waldron has recently been called by San Diego and he is all set to get his first taste of action in the big leagues against Washington. The Nationals are in the bottom half of the majors in terms of OPS, so that’s a good sign for Waldron’s chances to come up with a great performance in his MLB debut.
Before his call-up, Waldron went 1-6 with a 7.02 ERA for the El Paso Chihuahuas. The numbers don’t look good on Waldron, but his knuckleball could wobble baffle Washington’s hitters. Waldron can also hope that his teammates will come up big at the plate and take advantage of Gray’s seemingly hittable stuff. Gray has allowed 10 earned runs on 15 hits in his last 12 innings on the mound.
Starting pitcher: Matt Waldron (0-0, 0-0)
El Jefe’s Prediction on Washington Nationals vs San Diego Padres
It’s not going to be a great night for Waldron performance-wise, but the Padres will save him by lighting up Gray. Taking the Padres to win.
Prediction:
The Padres win, 7-5.
