Betting on the San Diego Padres (-105)
The Padres finally saw their offense and pitching come up big on the same night, as they defeated Toronto Tuesday in the series opener, 9-1. San Diego hopes to keep things the same, as the Padres send Yu Darvish to the mound.
Darvish won his last start, allowing just an earned run on five hits with nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings of an 8-3 win against the Philadelphia Phillies on the road last Friday. He is 4-3 with a 5.52 ERA in eight road starts this season, but has allowed just four earned runs on 12 hits with 13 strikeouts over his last two starts. Trent Grisham is having a nice start to the second half of the season, as he is batting .389 with two home runs and four doubles since the All-Star break.
Starting pitcher: Yu Darvish (6-6, 4.65 ERA)
Betting on the Toronto Blue Jays (-115)
Although they got demolished in the series opener against the Padres, the Blue Jays still are feeling positive about their outlook for this contest. For one, that loss to San Diego was only Toronto’s first through four games since the All-Star break. On the mound later tonight for the Blue Jays is Jose Berrios, who’s been doing fine of late. Over his last two starts, he has surrendered just an earned run on eight hits with 10 strikeouts across 12.1 innings. He did not get a pitching win in any of those starts, but the Blue Jays nonetheless got wins in both.
Whit Merrifield, who is hitting .292 this season, can improve his numbers, as he is 4-for-14 with a double and an RBI in his career versus Darvish. There’s also George Springer, who is 9-for-22 with three home runs and five RBIs against Darvish.
Starting pitcher: Jose Berrios (8-6, 3.41 ERA)
El Jefe’s Prediction on San Diego Padres vs Toronto Blue Jays
Berrios will likely do a much better job than Alek Manoah, but the Padres’ offense is looking dangerous at the moment, especially after Juan Soto went 3-for-4 with a homer and double in the series opener. Taking the Padres to win.
Prediction:
The Padres win, 7-3.
