The Padres snapped a two-game losing skid by taking the opener of their series against the Marlins on Tuesday to the tune of a 9-4 score. San Diego has now won four of its last six games and will look to go back-to-back when it sends Blake Snell to the mound later tonight. Snell rebounded from a bad performance in a loss to the Boston Red Sox on May 19 by silencing the bats of the Washington Nationals in an 8-6 road win last Thursday.
In that game, Snell gave up just an earned run on four hits while striking out six Nats hitters. Snell has considerable experience pitching against current Marlins players, who only have a collective career batting average of .247 versus the Padres’ lefty. The same set of Marlins hitters also has just a .292 xwOBA against Snell. Juan Soto will look to close out May on a high note at the plate, having hit .345 with five home runs so far this month.

The loss to the Padres on Tuesday was only Miami’s’ first in four games. Getting the call to start in Game 2 of this series for the Marlins will be Braxton Garrett, who’s been pretty solid in his last few appearances. The 25-year-old southpaw has pitched for at least 5.0 innings in each of his last three starts and allowed no more than two runs in any of those appearances.
He struggled mightily in his first couple of starts this month, but he’s seemingly righted the ship and pitching with confidence. Speaking of which, Garrett hopes to draw more confidence from Miami’s offense which features Jorge Soler. The veteran designated hitter is 3-for-7 in his career against Snell. He is also leading the Marlins this season with 17 home runs and 35 RBI.
