The Padres’ offense luckily woke up at the right time, and on Friday, with a ruthless attack against Max Scherzer’s pitching, placed themselves within one win of advancing to the NLDS.
San Diego’s offense hit four home runs against the Mets’ outstanding starter, two in the first inning and two more in the fifth. The party was started by Josh Bell and followed by Trent Grisham, Jurickson Profar and Manny Machado.
Yu Darvish took care of the rest, pitching seven one-run, six-strikeout innings to maintain his lead over the Mets this season. Previously, in two starts this season, the Japanese pitcher conceded only one run and struck out 15 players in 14 innings against the New York organization.

After being knocked out of first place in the East Division by the Braves and now having to avoid a sweep by the Padres, the Mets’ downturn could begin as early as Saturday.
Manager Buck Showalter will send another of his star pitchers to the mound: Jacob deGrom. Due to a blister on one of his right-hand fingers, the right-hander was doubtful until the last minute, but given the critical need for a win, he will play against the potent San Diego offense.
Since he was recovering from an injury suffered in the preseason, deGrom opened only 11 games, and in his last four he struggled by allowing at least three runs in each of them. The good news is that he feels comfortable at home and has registered a 2.52 ERA in 35.2 games.
However, the starter bears only a portion of the responsability, as the offense must do its part after scoring only one run on Friday. The problem is that the Mets struggled this year against San Diego’s pitching, scoring two runs or fewer in four of six regular round games. This is something they urgently need to reverse in order to help deGrom.
