Blake Snell will look to end the Padres’ slump when he’s on the mound, as he gets the ball for this Thursday contest. The Padres have lost in each of the last three starts of Snell, who is also just 1-2 with a 5.32 ERA in four appearances so far this month of May. Snell is coming off a poor start, giving up six earned runs on five hits in just four innings of a 6-1 home loss to the Boston Red Sox last Friday.
He looked solid, though, in his most recent start away from home which was when he pitched for six innings and allowed just two earned runs on four hits, albeit in a 4-2 loss at Dodger Stadium at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers. There is perhaps more upside for San Diego’s bullpen, which is arguably the best in the National League, as it it’s top five in the NL in ERA.
Starting pitcher: Blake Snell (1-6, 5.40 ERA)
Betting on the Washington Nationals
- Season record 2023: 21-28
- Moneyline: (+155)
- Run Line: (+1.5, -105)
- Over/Under: (9.5)
All odds are provided by DraftKings.
Jake Irvin will look to recapture the terrific form in his first couple of appearances this season when he takes the mound later tonight against the Padres. Over his first two starts of the year (and of his career), Irvin surrendered just an earned run on six hits while also fanning out eight hitters in 10.2 innings during wins against the Chicago Cubs at home and over the San Francisco Giants on the road.
Since then, he’s given up 10 earned runs on 11 hits in 7.1 innings of work over the course of two appearances. It appears that he’s been having a hot-and-cold experience in the big leagues, so he could show up with his best form again in this series finale versus the Padres. Corey Dickerson and the Nats’ offense have Irvin’s back. Dickerson is 2-for-7 with both those hits coming via home runs in his career against the Snell. As a team, the Nationals’ current roster has a lifetime batting average of .264 versus Snell.
Starting pitcher: Jake Irvin (1-2, 5.50 ERA)
JefeBet Prediction
No Padres player has ever faced Irvin before in the big leagues, so he comes as a bit of a mystery for them. Irvin will have some shaky moments but the Nats will get enough runs to get by San Diego.
Prediction: The Nationals win, 6-5.
