Betting on the San Diego Padres (-195)
Frustrations are growing once again for the Padres, as they have lost their last two games to close out a three-game series against the Washington Nationals over the weekend. They will be hoping that Yu Darvish will be in his top form this Monday night, as he gets the nod to start. Darvish has picked up a loss in each of his last two starts, getting tagged for a total of 10 earned runs on 15 hits over 11 innings.
But say what you want to say about Darvish’s performance of late, the fact remains that current Pirates players only have a career batting average of .184 against him. In his career in the MLB thus far, Darvish is 4-2 with a 2.63 ERA in nine starts. The Padres are also 7-2 in their last nine games after an outing in which they gave up at least five runs. (They lost to the Nationals on Sunday, 8-3).
Starting pitcher: Yu Darvish (5-6, 4.84 ERA)
Betting on the Pittsburgh Pirates (+165)
At 43 years old, Rich Hill is still going strong. In four starts so far this June, Hill has gone 2-2 with a 3.33 ERA over 24.1 innings of action. In his most recent start, Hill allowed three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks issued in 5.2 innings of an 8-3 loss at home to the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday.
He has allowed no more than three earned runs while pitching no fewer than five innings in each of his last four starts overall. The Pirates, who are coming off a 2-0 loss to the Miami Marlins on the road on Sunday hope that they can recover their offense when they get back home for this series against the Padres. They have also won four of their last five games following a rest day.
Starting pitcher: Rich Hill (6-7, 4.34 ERA)
El Jefe’s Prediction on San Diego Padres vs Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates are one of the most disappointing teams this season, but they still are loaded. With Darvish on the mound, they should be able to handle the Pirates just fine.
Prediction:
The Padres win, 4-3.
