Betting on the San Diego Padres (TBA)
Yu Darvish could start this Sunday against the Reds, but there’s still a big possibility that he ultimately misses another scheduled start because of an illness. If Darvish ultimately couldn’t give it a go, the Padres might turn to Pedro Avila, who just got recalled from Triple-A El Paso. In 16 total appearances for El Paso, including 13 starts, Avila has collected a 1-5 record and an 8.49 ERA.
Those are not great numbers to look at, but that could end up not mattering at all this Sunday if the Padres explode anew at the plate. The Padres beat the Reds Saturday to the tune of a 12-5 score. Trent Grisham has hit .263/.391/.737 with two home runs, a double, and a triple in his last six games, while Ha-Seong Kim has batted .333 with two home runs and five RBIs in the same stretch.
Starting pitcher: Yu Darvish (5-6, 4.84 ERA)
Betting on the Cincinnati Reds (TBA)
Stepping on the mound for the Reds in this series finale is Andrew Abbott, who has been so dependable this season for Cincinnati. He has yet to pick up a loss in his career in the big league. Abbott, who made his debut in the MLB last June, is 4-0 with a 1.21 ERA and 0.94 WHIP so far this year.
In his most recent start, he towered over the Baltimore Orioles’ offense in a 3-1 road win, as he allowed just an earned run on two hits with eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. He has 18 strikeouts and four earned runs allowed on six hits in his last couple of starts. Those strong starts are a strong message sent to the Padres, who have been dealing with head-scratching inconsistency at the plate this season.
Starting pitcher: Andrew Abbott (4-0, 1.21 ERA)
El Jefe’s Prediction on San Diego Padres vs Cincinnati Reds
Abbott is looking like the real deal for the Reds. In one of his starts this season, he tamed the reigning World Series champions with six scoreless innings of work in a 2-1 win on the road against the Houston Astros. Abbott deals with San Diego just fine and leads Cincy to a victory.
Prediction:
The Reds win, 5-3.
