Yu Darvish started his schedule this June with a bang, as he silenced the offense of the Chicago Cubs in a 6-0 Padres win at home last Saturday. In that game, Darvish tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out nine Cubs hitters while allowing just two hits and issuing a single walk. That was as good as any rebound Darvish could have asked for after allowing seven earned runs to the New York Yankees in a previous start.
Darvish has yet to face the Rockies this season, but last year, he went 2-0 with five earned runs on 11 hits over two starts versus Colorado. San Diego’s batters must feel good about their chances against Rockies starter Austin Gomber, whom they scored three runs off of in a 3-1 win last April at home.

Sure, he got wrecked by the Padres the first time he started against them this season, but Gomber has functioned like a lucky charm for the Rockies over his last several starts. In fact. Colorado has won all of Gomber’s last four appearances on the mound and five of his last six.
It’s also worth mentioning that in three appearances against the Padres in 2022, Gomber allowed just an earned run on seven hits across a total of 9.1 innings. Meanwhile, the Rockies will lean on the likes of Ryan McMahon and Mike Moustakas in trying to solve Darvish. McMahon is 7-for-24 with two home runs and four RBI in his career against Darvish, while Moustakas is 7-for-19 with two home runs and five RBI.
