Betting on the Pittsburgh Pirates (TBA)
The Pirates get another start from the fantastic Mitch Keller, who has been solid in his last two starts. During those games, he allowed just two earned runs on nine hits with only two walks surrendered to go with 10 strikeouts in 13 total innings. On the season, Keller has 118 total strikeouts and a 1.10 WHIP. Moreover, his FIP (3.24) is lower than his ERA this season, to date.
Keller pitched last season at Dodger Stadium and picked up a win, allowing just two earned runs on two hits, albeit with five free passes issued, in five innings of work on the mound. In his most recent start away from home, Keller surrendered just an earned run on five hits in seven innings on the mound of a 6-4 loss to the Miami Marlins on June 22. Offensively, the Pirates are supplying Keller with 5.31 runs per nine innings. Andrew McCutchen also has good numbers against Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw, going 11-for-31 with a home run, five RBIs, and three walks in his career against the future Hall of Famer.
Starting pitcher: Mitch Keller (9-3, 3.34 ERA)
Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers (TBA)
Kershaw is coming off a much stronger month of June than Keller. In five starts last month, Kershaw went 4-0 with a 1.09 ERA. The 35-year-old Dodgers ace is looking like his vintage self over his last handful of starts, and he can add to his recent success with another beautiful performance on the mound when he faces off against the Pirates this Monday. Kershaw is especially tough to get around for opposing teams when he’s pitching in front of LA’s home crowd. On the season, Kershaw is 4-1 with a 1.70 ERA and .191 opponents’ batting average in six starts at Dodger Stadium.
Conversely, Pittsburgh’s Kelly has a 4-2 record on the road this season, but he also sports a 4.02 ERA and .249 opponents’ batting average when he’s working the mound away from home. Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman are two hitters to watch out for in this game against Keller. Heyward is 4-for-15 with a homer in his career against Keller, while Freeman, who’s been great all season long, is 5-for-9 with two walks and two RBIs in this lifetime batter-pitcher matchup.
Starting pitcher: Clayton Kershaw (10-4, 2.55 ERA)
El Jefe’s Prediction on Pittsburgh Pirates vs Los Angeles Dodgers
It’s tough to beat the Dodgers when it’s a red-hot Kershaw starting for the team. However, that shaky Dodgers bullpen could have the Pirates put together some runs from the middle to the last innings. Still taking the Dodgers to win.
Prediction:
The Dodgers win, 5-4
