Betting on the Pittsburgh Pirates (+210)
It’s been an up-and-down adventure of late for the Pirates, who will be starting Quinn Priester for this series-opener against the Padres. Pittsburgh is 2-2 in its last four games and is coming off a 7-5 road loss to Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
Priester is making just his second start of the year (of his career, actually) later tonight and he’s hoping for a much better result than his big league debut. Against the Cleveland Guardians at home on July 17, Priester allowed seven earned runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of an 11-0 loss. Hopefully for Priester, he gets ample run support from his teammates. Henry Davis is 6-for-20 with two home runs in his last six games, while Jared Triolo has hit .261 with two RBIs in his last 23 at-bats.

Betting on the San Diego Padres (-250)
The Padres are also coming off a loss, as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park Sunday. Nevertheless, San Diego is looking fine of late, going 4-2 in its last six games overall.
On the mound for the Padres for tonight’s game is Yu Darvish, who has picked up a win in each of his last two starts. Moreover, Darvish is 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA in three starts so far this month of July. Behind Darvish is the Pirates’ offense that features Xander Bogaerts and Ha-Seong Kim, who are hitting .341 and .325, respectively, since the MLB All-Star break, with three home runs and five doubles combined. Against a newbie in Priester, San Diego’s hitters could have a big night in Pittsburgh in this series opener.
