After four consecutive losses, the Red Sox appear to be on the upswing again, as they are on a two-game win streak. They edged out the Seattle Mariners by a combined score of 21-7 in their last two matchups of a recent three-game series at Fenway Park. That certainly gave Boston a huge boost heading into a long road trip that starts this Friday at Petco Park.
Starting for the Red Sox in Game 1 versus San Diego is veteran James Paxton, who had just returned from a stint on the injured list. In his first start of the season – his most recent one as well – Paxton allowed just two earned runs on four hits with nine strikeouts in five innings of an 8-6 home loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on May 12. Paxton is also hoping to receive ample run support behind him, with the Red Sox’s offense having produced a lot of late. In fact, the Red Sox are second overall in the majors with an average of 6.60 worth of run support per nine innings for their starters.

They have only won two times in their last 11 outings, and that stretch includes a series loss to the Kansas City Royals at home this week. San Diego won the first game of that series, 4-0, before losing the final two by a combined score of 9-7.
Looking to help save the Padres from further embarrassment this Friday is Blake Snell. The 30-year-old lefty is just 1-5 with a 4.61 ERA this season but has looked better of late. In three starts this month of May, Snell has gone 1-1 with a 3.50 ERA across 18.0 total innings. Snell also has favorable splits against current Red Sox hitters, who have a collective wOBA of 0.244 and xWOBA of 0.283 versus the Padres pitcher.
