Betting on Lithuania

Lithuania barely had any problem in their tournament opener, as they dismantled Egypt in a 93-67 victory. Margiris Nomantas led the Lithuanians with 18 points coming off the bench, while Jonas Valanciunas led the starters with a double-double of 15 points and 10 assists. Although they shot just 42.1 percent from the field, Lithuania got a ton of extra possessions thanks to their 22 offensive rebounds.

Lithuania have real depth even though many consider the current team as not on par with recent versions of their predecessors. Against Egypt, Lithuania’s bench generated 55 points to just 11 by their opponents. That is a strong message by Lithuania’s reserves to their next opponents in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Betting on Mexico

Mexico had a bad start to their FIBA World Cup campaign, as they suffered a 91-71 loss to Nikola Vucevic and Montenegro on Friday. Mexico were led in that game by Pako Cruz, who scored 16 points on 7/14 shooting from the field, while Joshua Ibarra and Fabian Jaimes chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively. Vucevic was just too much for Mexico, as he had 27 points on 11/15 shooting from the field.

Another big man in the form of Valanciunas will pose a big threat in the paint for Mexico, but they can still come up with a solution for that. “We gave them both things today and obviously, the offensive rebounds. I think that was the key to the game today,” Cruz said after the game, so look for Mexico to have a much more intense approach on the glass, in closing out on shooters, and tightening up their interior defense. Those are all easier said than done, but that’s major items on Mexico’s checklist this Sunday.

El Jefe’s Prediction on Lithuania vs Mexico

Mexico show up with a much better performance by getting more balanced production, particularly from the bench. But Lithuania still come away with a win.

Prediction: Lithuania win, 90-76.
