Betting on the Marquette Golden Eagles
- Regular Season Record: 27-6
Marquette just took down not just a Big East powerhouse but a legitimate national title contender when the Golden Eagles beat the UConn Huskies in the semifinals of the Big East tournament Friday night, 70-68. Prior to that, the Golden Eagles toppled the St. John’s Red Storm in the quarterfinals, 72-70.
Passing the test against Connecticut just shows how dangerous Marquette is. The Huskies have one of the best defenses in the nation but the Golden Eagles found a way to break past that, thanks in large part to Marquette’s 3-point shooting. Marquette went 11/29 from deep in the win over the Huskies, and it’s now made at least 11 3-pointers in three of its last five games. Back in the regular season, Marquette was No. 1 in the Big East with a 56.8 eFG%.
Betting on the Xavier Musketeers
- Regular Season Record: 25-8
Xavier will be meeting Marquette in the Big East title game after eking out a dominant 82-60 win in the semis over the Creighton Bluejays. That was a bit surprising result, as Creighton was no pushover, but that also showed just how all-business Xavier is in the tournament. The Musketeers won the first meeting this season against Marquette back in January at home, 80-76, and lost the second one, but by only the slimmest of margins, 69-68.
Xavier dominated the rebounding battle in the Creighton game, 45-27, which allowed the Musketeers to be plus-14 in the field-goal attempts department. The Musketeers have what it takes to win a firefight against Marquette, with the X-Men finishing the regular season fifth in the nation with 120.2 points per 100 possessions.
