Notes about the Experts’ Analysis

  • Three of the four teams left standing in the 2023 NCAA tournament are first-timers in the Final Four round. Only the Connecticut Huskies have been to this stage before. The last time the Huskies went this far in the Big Dance, they won it all in 2014, with Kevin Ollie as head coach. This time, it’s Dan Hurley who’s calling the shots for UConn, which has been sensational on both ends of the floor all season long.
  • The Hurricanes are the underdogs in their upcoming matchup against Connecticut, but they’re used to that label. They have been defying expectations this season, and they just did win against a No. 1 and No. 2 seed on their way to the Final Four. In the Sweet 16 round, the Hurricanes eliminated the No. 1 Houston Cougars and then sent home the No. 2 Texas Longhorns in the Elite Eight.
  • San Diego State left no doubt about how serious of a contender it is to win the national title when it scored a 71-64 win in the Sweet 16 round to knock out the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide. In the Elite Eight round, a controversial call in the dying seconds of the contest against the Creighton Bluejays led to a 67-66 victory for San Diego State, which has a suffocating defense that can stifle any team.
  • Florida Atlantic has survived the tests given to it by the Tennessee Volunteers and the Kansas State Wildcats in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively. In other words, the Owls have shown enough to prove that they are more than just a flash in the pan in the Big Dance.
  • Remember, the Owls are a champion in their own rights, having topped not just the regular season standings in the Conference USA but also that league’s tournament to snatch a place in the 2023 NCAA tournament. Johnell Davis is a relentless do-it-all dynamo for the Owls, who shoot and defend well enough to cause problems for their opponents.
