Virginia unofficially ended the March Madness dreams of preseason No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels with a 68-59 win Thursday. By winning, the Cavs kept their own hopes alive of topping the tournament. Virginia’s defense is known to suffocate teams, and that’s exactly what it’s done for the most part of the season.
The Hoos finished the regular season seventh overall in Division I basketball with just 60.4 points allowed per game and No. 1 in the ACC with only 98.1 points surrendered per 100 possessions adjusted. When they beat Clemson late last February at home, 64-57, the Tigers shot just 41.8 percent from the field and also committed three more turnovers than the Cavaliers, who covered the spread in the North Carolina game. Also take note that the Hoos are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games after an ATS win.

But the focus right now for Clemson is fully on beating the Cavaliers. In their last game, the Tigers torched the NC State Wolfpack on Thursday, 80-54.
That explosive win for Clemson gives the Tigers huge momentum heading into this coming date with Virginia. The Tigers’ outside shooting could spell trouble for Virginia’s defense, with Clemson nailing at least 11 3-pointers in each of its last three games, including in the school’s win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish last Saturday when it went 13/29 from deep. The Tigers are Tigers are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games.
