Betting on Slovenia

Let’s get this one out of the way first: Slovenia will go as far as where Luka Doncic takes them. That’s the same case for Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks, and even more so in the FIBA World Cup. In the 2022-23 NBA season, Doncic put up 32.4 points, grabbed 8.6 rebounds, and dished out 8.0 assists per contest.

Slovenia absorbed a painful hit to their roster when Vlatko Cancar suffered a serious knee injury earlier this month. With Cancar out of the picture, Slovenia will put more pressure on the shoulders of Mike Tobey to deliver. The former Virginia Cavaliers big man averaged 16.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game for Slovenia in last year’s FIBA EuroBasket. Guards Klemen Prepelič and Jaka Blažič are also expected to give Slovenia needed support on offense behind the do-it-all Doncic.

Betting on Venezuela

Ranked 17th in the world, Venezuela arrive in Japan hoping that their experience would serve them well in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Venezuela is said to be one of the oldest teams in the field, with a veteran-laden roster that features the likes of Nestor Colmenares, Windi Graterol, Heissler Guillent, Miguel Ruiz, Gregory Vargas, and David Cubillan.

It’s also worth noting that all but one of those six players were not on Venezuela’s roster in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China. Michael Carrera was also part of that team in China, and he will be counted upon to deliver on the offensive end of the floor. He led Venezuela with 11.6 points per game in the FIBA Americas Qualifiers.
