Ahead of his highly anticipated fight on May 7 against Dmitry Bivol in the light heavyweight division, Saúl Canelo Álvarez shocked his millions of fans by talking openly about the money he received for his first fight in professional boxing.
“I earned 800 Mexican pesos for that fight. I had to pay half of that in tickets, because my family is very big, and they wanted to see me fight,” revealed the Guadalajara-born fighter during an interview with DAZN, while recalling his debut in 2005.
Canelo added: “I only got paid half the money for my first fight. I love boxing, and I’ve never done it for money before.”
In that fight, Álvarez won by way of a technical knockout against an opponent named Abraham González, in an event held in Jalisco, Mexico.
The figure revealed by the Mexican is in stark contrast to the average of more than $50 million dollars he currently earns per fight, as he is considered the best boxer pound for pound.
