Carlos Correa’s move to the Minnesota Twins after ending his stint with the Houston Astros shocked the baseball world and even the Twins’ fans themselves, who did not expect the player to join the franchise, especially given his current situation.

The Puerto Rican signed a three-year, $105.3 million contract with the organization, but he has the option to opt out of his contract at the end of this season to test free agency. The deal seemed right for both sides: Carlos Correa would have options to try out for the team and the Twins would acquire a high-level player for the shortstop position, albeit on a short-term basis. Now, after the player’s latest statements, there is reason to be hopeful of retaining him for several more years.

I told ‘em, ’Hey guys, I know I have the opt-outs in the contract. But I really like it here.’ I love the people here. I love the way I’m treated here. If you guys see the value I bring to this organization and what I do for other people around me and the game that I bring, I would love to have a long-term relationship here if that’s what you guys would like. My wife feels right at home in Minnesota. My son is growing up. We feel right at home and it’s only two or three weeks into the season. That’s where I am mentally.

Derek Falvey, president of baseball operations for the Twins, has signaled his intention to keep Carlos Correa with the team for the long term. And why not? We are talking about one of the best players in his position.

We had hoped that he would want to stay here for a long time and nothing about that feeling has changed. Now out of respect for Carlos and our team’s focus on the game, we do not comment publicly about contracts during the season. I certainly expect we’ll maintain open lines of communication with both Carlos and [agent Scott Boras].

Is the Cold North Affecting Carlos Correa?

Beyond having made public his intentions to stay in the franchise, the truth is that Carlos Correa has not lived up to expectations in these first few weeks, but the Minnesota Twins still sit atop the American League Central division with a 9-8 record.

The shortstop is hitting for a career-low .192/.288/.288 average with just one homerun and 3 RBIs. Despite these numbers, Correa has been optimistic about his chances of improving, mentioning that “April is just one month” and showing his mettle despite his bad streak.

April is always a difficult month for me. That’s why I look so calm. You will never see me throwing a helmet or anything like that, showing frustration. April is just one month. We have five more months in the season

Indeed, the season is still young, and if Correa can help lead the Twins to an unexpected postseason berth, this whole April slump will only remain an anecdote.
