The next few weeks will likely define Cooper Kupp’ s future with the Los Angeles Rams even though the star wide receiver still has two more seasons on his contract with the reigning NFL champions.
According to ESPN, Kupp confessed that he is in the midst of extension negotiations with the organization and was very clear that at the end of the day he wants his deal to be completely different from how the wide receiver market behaved during the current preseason.
“I don’t think that’s really the kind of approach I take,” the 28-year-old said. “I definitely think there’s a place you want to be. There’s a place where you feel it’s right. A place for me and for this organization… I’m not trying to beat anybody. I’m not trying to compare myself to anybody else. It’s more about being in a place that’s right for both sides.”
Cooper Kupp on his contract extension with the Rams
In the midst of multi-million dollar movements like Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins and Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders, many expect the contract the Rams offer Cooper Kupp to exceed the $30 million per year that Hill will begin earning in each of the future seasons in the state of Florida.
While the speedy Hill signed for $120 million and the unstoppable Adams signed for five seasons and $140 million, according to Spotrac.com Kupp ranks 18th among the circuit’s catchers at $15.75 million per year following a three-season, $47.25 million extension signed in 2020.
And, while Hill and Adams both deserve to be among the top paid players in the league, Kupp has a strong argument for matching or exceeding those figures following a season in which he dominated opposing defenses from start to finish.
The Rams’ 2017 third-round pick led the league in receptions (145), yards (1,947) and touchdown receptions (16) to take the triple crown within the position and pave his way to Offensive Player of the Year honors. But his numbers were not only spectacular in the regular round, as he also shined in the playoffs and ended up being selected as the MVP of the Super Bowl, in which his team emerged as the winner.
Cooper Kupp is a priority for the Rams
Starting the 2022 NFL season without Cooper Kupp sounds like a bad idea, so the Los Angeles Rams are working hard to ensure that the receiver can open the regular season with the assurance that he will have a home in California for many more years.
This was reiterated by the team’s own head coach, Sean McVay, to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic. According to the head coach, there is good dialogue in the organization not only with Kupp, but also with Aaron Donald to extend their contracts before the start of voluntary workouts. Despite the fact that their contractual situation is unclear, it appears that both players will not miss training.
For his part, Kupp sent a message of unity and friendship to his teammates and to the organization itself, suggesting that the relationship continues to be prosperous and calm.
“I think it’s important to be here, to be around the guys and this team. The goal at the end of the day is to win a championship. Whatever gets us to a place where we can compete for another championship and put us in a better position where we can be a better soccer team, that’s the goal. I think the best thing I can do is be a part of that.”
