Joaquín Velázquez, Cruz Azul‘s assistant, was separated from his duties due to his detention for a judicial process he has had pending since 2018.

The “Máquina Cementera” started with the bad news long before their elimination from the Concachampions. Before Tuesday night’s game at the Azteca Stadium, where the team would be seeking a ticket to the Concachampions final, authorities detained Joaquín Velázquez Elvira, on his way to the building on Periférico Sur to sit on the bench next to the coach Juan Reynoso.

However, it was not until the end of the match that the institution made the facts known.

In a press release, the club informed that Joaquín Velázquez’s assistant was arrested at 7:00 p.m., and explained the reason for his arrest.

“The arrest stems from a judicial process initiated against him in 2018 and of which both the board of directors of Club Deportivo Cruz Azul as well as those of us who head the Boards of Directors and Supervisory Board of Cooperativa La Cruz Azul S.C.L were unaware,” the text quotes.

They also notified that this led to Velázquez being removed from his duties: “As a result of the aforementioned, and in full commitment to order, legality, our institutional values and responsibility to our fans as a whole, we wish to inform that the assistant has been removed from his duties.

The institution also said that they will be at the disposal of the authorities: “Cruz Azul places its trust in the institutions of our country, while calling on all the team’s fans and the media as a whole, to maintain the presumption of innocence and fully respect the terms and deadlines of the judicial process.”

Cruz Azul’s Bad News

It seems that the blue and whites are carrying a black cloud over them. The first concern came with the confirmation of Carlos Rodríguez’s injury, which will keep him out of the field until the end of the tournament. The player, who had been one of the key players in Juan Reynoso’s starting eleven, was injured in the match against Mazatlán and suffered a fibula fracture.

After that bad news, a couple more followed. Before the match, Velázquez was arrested, which could have an impact on the team’s environment and could break the team’s concentration heading into the final stretch of the Clausura 2022.

The last, and perhaps most regrettable, is the fact that they were knocked out of the Concachampions, after losing 2-1 on aggregate to Pumas of the UNAM.
