The last few hours have become a total nightmare for San Francisco 49ers fans after one of their main stars, Deebo Samuel, gave some not-so-encouraging statements regarding his future with the California team.
In the midst of talks to extend his contract with the organization, Samuel confessed to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington that he asked team management to be traded before the 2022 NFL season. A real blow to the entire nation of “niners”.
Through his Twitter account, Darlington noted that Samuel declined to give specific reasons for his request to the San Francisco team, only that he had communicated his desire to leave the organization with which he debuted in 2019 after being taken in the second round of that year’s Draft.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport added that the 49ers have made several offers to Samuel without receiving a response from the wide receiver, who had confirmed that he would not report to the team’s voluntary workouts.
According to the reporter, the reason for this would be that the young player is not happy with the way San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan used him last season by splitting his playing time between receiver and running back. While Samuel recorded 77 receptions, he ran with the ball 59 times, something that worries the player because of the number of hits he suffers when used in this way.
However, it is thanks to this same duality that Samuel has positioned himself as one of the circuit’s stars and is coveted by many organizations once he enters the last year of his rookie contract.
In 2021 Samuel became the only player in league history to record at least 1,400 yards through the air and 300 on the ground as he finished with 1,770 off the line of scrimmage. He totaled 1,405 yards, six touchdowns and averaged 18.2 yards per reception (a league-leading 18.2 yards per reception), while accumulating 365 yards (6.2 yards per carry) and eight touchdowns on the ground.
