Mexico’s Edson Álvarez could leave Ajax for a Premier League side this summer, according to reports in the British press.

In July 2019, Edson Álvarez emigrated to the Old Continent to play for Ajax of the Eredivisie, and since then he has made a place for himself in the team, which is why he is currently one of the Aztecs’ references in European soccer. Rumors have recently begun to circulate that he could soon be leaving Dutch soccer for the Premier League.

The English newspaper The Mirror published a report suggesting that Mexican Edson Álvarez could become a Manchester United player. A couple of days ago, news transcended about Dutchman Erik ten Hag becoming the new coach of the “Red Devils” for next season. The strategist arrives from Ajax, so he knows Álvarez very well. The publication of the English newspaper suggests that the Aztec player would be one of the options due to his skills.

“A destroyer-like midfielder would hugely benefit Ten Hag and co, someone who can act as an enforcer and protect the back four. Luckily for the incoming manager, Edson Alvarez is just that. Adept at winning duels both in the air and on the ground, Alvarez’s knack for snuffing out danger is exactly the kind of skill the Red Devils require.”

Edson Álvarez has a contract with Ajax until 2025. He has been getting involved under Ten Hag’s commands and that makes the option that he may be thinking of taking him with him to Manchester a little more credible.

In addition to Álvarez, it is said that teammates Ryan Gravenberch, Antony and Jurriën Timber could also follow the tactician to the Premier League.

How Has Edson Álvarez Fared at Ajax?

In the current campaign, the Mexican player has participated in 36 games for the Netherlands, and although he does not play in an attacking position, he has two goals and one assist.

Edson Álvarez and Ajax lost the Dutch Cup against PSV last Sunday by a score of 2-1, and now only the Eredivisie is at stake. They currently lead the league standings with 72 points, four points behind chasing PSV, with four games left to play.

“Machín” has won three titles with Ajax, the Dutch Supercup (2019), the Dutch Cup (2021) and the Eredivisie (2021).
