SMU vs Oklahoma Predictions, Picks, Odds Sep 9 2023

The Mustangs barely broke a sweat in their 38-14 Week 1 win over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in Dallas last Saturday for SMU’s first win of the season. Behind the  Redshirt sophomore quarterback Preston Stone passed for 248 yards and three touchdowns on 23/37 completions, while LJ Johnson Jr. burned rubber for 128 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

SMU seems to have enough weapons downfield to stretch opposing defenses and give extra room for Johnson to navigate. With the likes of Jordan Hudson, Jordan Kerley, and tight end RJ Maryland, SMU is expected to make at least a few dents on Oklahoma’s defense. Remember that just last year, the Mustangs were among the highest-scoring teams in the nation with an average of 36.6 points per game.

SMU vs Oklahoma Predictions, Picks, Odds Sep 9 2023

The Sooners were more unforgiving to their Week 1 opponents than the Mustangs were to theirs. Oklahoma absolutely wrecked the Arkansas State Red Wolves at home, 73-0. That kind of domination was expected, but it was still astonishing. Dillon Gabriel passed for 308 yards and two touchdowns with zero picks on 19/22 completions. Gabriel’s presence under center gives Oklahoma so much confidence in its offense.

Defensively, the Sooners still have questions to answer after a poor showing in that area in 2022, though, it was still a good sign for the team that it blanked the Red Wolves. For what it’s worth, their win over Arkansas State was the biggest win (in terms of margin) of the Sooners in a season opener since 1917.

El Jefe’s Prediction on SMU Mustangs vs Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners will have success on offense right away and will have a comfortable lead by the end of the first half. They will take care of that lead the rest of the way.

Prediction:

Oklahoma wins, 44-20
