Betting on the Chicago Bears (+2.5)
Preseason record: 1-0
The Bears are expected to see improvements on offense in the coming regular season. They seem to be headed in that direction, especially after their performance in their 23-17 home win over the Tennessee Titans last Saturday. Bears quarterback Justin Fields had 129 passing yards and two touchdowns on just 3/3 completions.
The two touchdowns were split between new weapon DJ Moore and running back Khalil Herbert. It is indeed exciting times for Chicago, which is 6-3-1 against the spread in its last 10 preseason games. If Fields, Moore, and Herbert play again in Week 2, they will be huge headaches for the Colts, who allowed the Buffalo Bills to go 6/12 on third downs last week. Don’t also forget the Bears’ defense who had eight sacks and two interceptions in the Tennessee game. That’s a strong message to send to the Colts.
Betting on the Indianapolis Colts (-2.5)
Preseason record: 0-1
Like the two other top quarterbacks taken in the 2023 NFL Draft (Bryce Young and CJ Stroud), Anthony Richardson also struggled in his first career preseason appearance. He went 7/12 for 67 passing yards and an interception in a 23-19 road loss at the hands of the Buffalo Bills. He is still figuring out the league, so it might take a bit more time for him to get into a rhythm.
Gardner Minshew also played in Week 1, and he passed for 72 yards on 6/6 completions. Minshew looked comfortable and if given more snaps in Week 2, the Colts can be expected to have more success in scoring points. Wide receiver Malik Turner shined downfield for the Colts against the Bills, as he had 48 receiving yards on four catches and four receptions. He might have just guaranteed himself increased attention from Colts QBs.
Indianapolis is 2-2-2 against the spread in its last six preseason games as the home team.
