Betting on the Washington Commanders (+2.0)
Regular season record: 3-5
The Commanders fell prey to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8, but at least they looked much more competitive than usual in a 38-31 defeat at the hands of the reigning NFC champions. Sam Howell went off for 397 passing yards and four touchdowns with an interception on 39/52 completions.
Despite the loss, Washington must have loved how its pass protection stepped up, allowing just a sack to Howell for a loss of nine yards. So long as Howell is getting above-average protection, he’s got the potential to go off just like he did in Week 8, and that could be the case in Week 9 versus New England’s mediocre pass rush. New England is just 30th in the league in both defensive sack rate (5.1%) and defensive interception rate (1.43%).
Betting on the New England Patriots (-2.0)
Regular season record: 2-6
The Patriots are back to their losing ways after suffering a 31-17 defeat to the Miami Dolphins on the road in Week 8. It’s not all that surprising that New England lost to Miami, which has an offense that the Patriots simply don’t have the capacity to keep up with.
On the season, the Patriots are 31st in the league with just 14.8 points per game. And it could get worse for them, with wide receiver Kendrick Bourne done for the rest of the season due to a season-ending injury. That being said, the Patriots have the opportunity to get something going on offense this coming Sunday since Washington is also one of the worst defensive teams this season. In fact, Washington is second-worst overall with 28.5 points allowed per game.

This has the makings of a sloppy football game, but I will have to give a slight edge to the Commanders simply because they looked much better based on their last outing. Also, they are 3-1 against the spread in road games this season while the Patriots are only just 1-3 ATS in Foxborough.
