The Lions’ dreadful season got a boost last Sunday when they defeated the Packers in what was their greatest defensive performance of the year.
That’s saying a lot for a defense that is considered the worst in the circuit and which has never allowed fewer than 24 points to an opponent. Detroit’s defense allows the most yards per play (6.4) and net yards in the air (7.5), while its 5.0 rushing yards average ranks fifth. They are also second to last in catches with 12 and are second in yards allowed to opponents with 3,338.
Of course, that dreadful defensive performance has been the key to the Lions’ mess, and they haven’t even been able to take advantage of the good season by Jared Goff and company. Despite several key injuries, Detroit is among the best offensive teams in the circuit: they are fourth in average yards per play with 6.0. Moreover, they are sixth in net yards per pass with 6.7, seventh in average yards per rush with 5.0 and have scored in 20 of their 28 visits in the red zone.

If the Bears hope to compete for a wild card spot, they must defeat the Lions at home after losing to the Cowboys and Dolphins in their previous two games.
Chicago’s situation is quite strange, for while they seem to have overcome their offensive problems, the defense, the weapon of the first seven weeks, fell apart in the last two games by allowing 49 and 35 points, respectively. Prior to that, the Bears hadn’t allowed more than 20 goals to their opponents in five of seven games.
On offense, the developments have coincided with Justin Fields’ improvement, as he threw for 123 yards and three touchdowns against Miami and ran for 178 yards and another touchdown. That shows how the Bears have gone from not scoring more than 23 points in their first seven games to not scoring less than 29 in their last three.
