Geno Smith recently commented that he will be back in Seattle Seahawks colors heading into the 2022 NFL campaign after re-signing with the team on a one-year, $7 million contract.
The deal will see him join the three quarterbacks on the roster alongside Jacob Eason and Drew Lock, with the latter arriving from the Denver Broncos in a trade that ended the tenure of former star quarterback Russell Wilson with the franchise.
The 2022 season would be the fourth one for Geno Smith with the Seattle Seahawks, who arrived in 2019 from the Los Angeles Chargers and has since served as a replacement for Russell Wilson in case the player was unable to be there. Now, Wilson’s absence means he has a chance to compete for a starting quarterback job, and he will have to earn that right during the offseason and preseason games.
Since joining the team, Geno Smith has appeared in just five games — four of them as starting — throwing for a total of 735 yards and five touchdown passes for a 69% pass completion percentage (69 of 100).
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll commented in March that should Smith return, he could be high on the list of priorities when considering who to put in the position, which puts him in with a good chance as he looks to take the job to lead Seattle to another postseason appearance after missing the playoffs in the 2021 season, though there will be work to do as Geno Smith has thrown more intercepted passes (37) than touchdowns (34) so far in his NFL career.
Geno Smith Is not the Only Option to Fill the Quarterback Position
While there are three players with the potential to play the quarterback position, the Seahawks may not be satisfied with the quality that exists at the position and explore new possibilities before the start of the NFL regular season in 2022.
There has been discussions about the possibility of the franchise bringing in a quarterback during this year’s draft, and there is also the possibility of getting a quarterback on the market.
One of them could be Baker Mayfield, who does not appear to be in the Cleveland Browns’ plans after the team acquired DeShaun Watson from the Houston Texans. Mayfield is unhappy with his situation in Cleveland and could be looking for a way out, although management has already mentioned that they are not willing to let the player go. The Seahawks, along with other teams, emerged as one of the teams interested in acquiring his services, and everything could change as the months go by in this offseason.
What is certain is that, for the time being, Geno Smith is back in the team, and having a quarterback already tested by Pete Carroll will undoubtedly be welcome as they look to plug the hole left by Russell Wilson.
