Giorgio Chiellini surprised everyone on this summer pass market by announcing his arrival at Major League Soccer.
The 37-year-old Italian defender will be the star addition to MLS’s LAFC, a team that has shown shortcomings along these lines this season.
Giorgio Chiellini was known to be released this summer after spending 17 seasons with Juventus, and his next destination was unknown. However, rumors circulated regarding his possible arrival to Major League Soccer, albeit no team was named.
This Sunday, June 12, the LAFC Twitter account announced that the Italian player will soon join their squad. The post shows a GIF of a box with the Los Angeles team logo as if it had arrived by parcel, together with a text in Italian announcing that “it will arrive soon.”
The defender, for his part, posted a video on his Twitter account this Monday morning, where he appears in the LAFC kit and announces that it will be the next chapter in his career.
Giorgio Chiellini’s career in Juventus comes to an end
The Italian is one of the legends not only of Juventus, but also of the Italian National Team. With the Vecchia Signora he played 559 games, and he scored 36 goals as a defender. He was crowned champion with the white-and-black shirt of Serie A on nine occasions, of the Supercoppa Italiana on five, and of the Coppa Italia on five, adding up 19 titles.
Giorgio Chiellini was a key member of the Italian team that won Euro 2020 last summer, defeating England on penalties in the final. That is the only title he has with the senior team, since on June 1 Chiellini’s Italy team lost the Finalissima against the Argentinian National Team by a score of 0-3.
The Italian veteran will bring his experience and quality to LAFC’s defensive line which has allowed 16 goals after 14 games played in the 2022 MLS season.
While it will be necessary to wait for Giorgio Chiellini to settle in Los Angeles and adapt to the team, everything will depend on the decision made by coach Steve Cherundolo: he may choose to give him a place in the starting eleven immediately, or he may decide to introduce him gradually to the team.
