The Phoenix Open is a highly anticipated PGA Tour event, known for its popularity and tradition. Since 1973, it has been held on Super Bowl weekend, starting the day with golf and transitioning to football.
With an attendance of nearly half a million people, it is the most well-attended tournament on the PGA Tour. The festive atmosphere is highlighted by the famous 16th hole, known as The Coliseum,
a par three that is one of the most well-known in the US. When there are holes in one, this little stadium really comes to life. The tournament’s prestige, high prize money, and its connection to the Super Bowl make it one of the most eagerly awaited events on the Tour.

Favorites
Rory McIlroy (+800 odds at BetMGM)
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy has been in top form, having won the only tournament he played this season, the CJ Cup, with a -17 score. He also took home the Dubai Desert Classic title on the European Tour with a -19 score, edging out Patrick Reed, who had a conflict with him during the tournament (they ignored each other and Reed threw a tee shot at Rory). McIlroy is now targeting The Players and the Masters, the latter being the only major he needs to complete his Grand Slam.
This will be his second time playing the PGA Phoenix Open, where he finished 13th in 2021.
Jon Rahm (+800 Odds at BetMGM)
The Spaniard is in the favorites’ zone because he already has two victories in the tour. He won the Sentry Tournament of Champions and the American Express Open, and in both he looked pretty good. At the Farmers Insurance, he played well and finished in the top 10, but had a very weak fourth round.
He shot 74, which he had not done all season. The main problem was that, for the first time in all this time, he had not encountered setbacks, and faced with them, he didn’t know how to overcome them. He has several participations in this tournament, and although he has never won it, he has never finished lower than sixteenth place.
Scottie Scheffler (Odds +1200 at BetMGM)
The defending champion has a good chance to win two consecutive editions, something that has not happened since Hideki Matsuyama won it in 2016 and 2017. This year he has played 5 tournaments, and although he has not won, he has finished in the Top 10 on 3 occasions. He finished the American Express Open in eleventh place and shot -22.
However, he has been improving: in fact, it was in that tournament when he shot his best score so far. He is on the rise and before the inclusion of McIlroy, he was the top favorite, but his share increased as soon as the Northern Irishman was confirmed.
Sleeper Picks
Justin Thomas (odds +2200 at BetMGM)
Justin Thomas knows this field like the back of his hand. He has finished inside the top 10 in the last 4 tournaments he has played here. This season has not been the best of his career, but he is good at the Phoenix Open, so it could be a real surprise to see him win.
Xander Schauffele (odds +1600 at BetMGM)
This is another golfer who really enjoys playing this course. He has been ranked no lower than seventeenth in 5 consecutive tournaments. This season he had a great participation in the American Express Open, where he finished third with a -25, the best score of his season.
Dark Horse
Hideki Matsuyama (odds +2800 at BetMGM)
Hideki Matsuyama, the two-time champion in 2016 and 2017, has the PGA Phoenix Open as one of his favorite courses. His powerful drive at Arizona’s height makes his game become much more aggressive and better. His best finish was at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he placed ninth with a score of -7. This season, he has improved steadily.
Matsuyama travels to one of his favorite venues with the intention of defeating opponents who are more skilled than him. Do you believe it’ll happen?
