Notes about the Experts’ Analysis for 2023 The Open Championship

  • McIlroy has been getting plenty of attention ahead of The Open Championship. That’s not surprising, though. He exudes sentimentality because it was at Royal Liverpool where he won his first (and still only) The Open Championship back in 2014, which was also the last year he won a major.
  • More than just the nostalgia of it all, McIlroy is also priced as a favorite because of his current form. The Northern Irishman is coming off a win at the Genesis Scottish Open last week and has finished inside the top 10 in each of his last six starts overall.  This year, he is 12/14 with two wins and nine top 10s.
  • Outside of McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler is also getting significant attention. After all, he is the No. 1 ranked player today and is also a perfect 19/19 this season.
  • The Golf Digest ranked 100 The Open Championship participants and has Brooks Koepka on top, with the publication citing the LIV Golf pro’s ability to step up during major tournaments: “The reason Koepka is so good at majors is he brings his best when the course is at its worst. If Hoylake plays mean, and it should, the winner will be golf’s baddest man.”
