Favorites
Russell Henley (+1400 on DraftKings)
Henley will continue his search for win no. 2 in the 2022-23 PGA Tour season. He bagged his first — and still only — win this season way back in November during the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship.
Since then, it’s been a mixed bag of mid-success and lows for Henley, who is 13/18 this season with two top 10s. He is 4/4 in his last four starts, though, a stretch that also saw him make the top 20 three times. Henley, who finished with a T4 as well at the 2023 Masters Tournament, is a perfect 3/3 at John Deere Classic tournaments, peaking with a runner-up finish in 2019.
Denny McCarthy (+1400 on DraftKings)
Coming off a T7 at the 2023 Travelers Championship, McCarthy will look to build on that notable performance when he tees off this week at TPC Deere Run. McCarthy is also 20/24 this season with five top 10s.
Ranked 34th in the world, McCarthy nearly scored his first win of the season last June at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday but fell awfully short in the playoffs against Viktor Hovland. Nevertheless, McCarthy went T20 in his next event (US Open) and sustained his good form with the aforementioned performance at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell.
Cameron Young (+1800 on DraftKings)
While he’s yet to come away with a win this season, Young is a solid 15/17 with three top 10s, including a runner-up performance at the 2023 World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play last March.
Young has also made the cut in each of his last three starts, so he’s riding on significant momentum on his way to TPC Deere Run.
Sleeper Picks
Alex Smalley (+4000 on DraftKings)
After three consecutive missed cuts last April, Smalley has picked up the pace. He’s gone 6/7 in his next seven starts since a missed cut at the 2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta.
Over that span, he had a T18 at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship, a T23 at the 2023 PGA Championship, and a T9 at the more recent 2023 Travelers Championship.
Peter Kuest (+10000 on DraftKings)
Kuest is coming off a fantastic performance at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic last week, turning heads with a T4. He fired a 64 in the first round and then a 65 and 68 in the third and fourth rounds. He is 3/4 this season with two top 25s.
Dark Horse
Joel Dahmen (+18000 on DraftKings)
Ranked 138th in the world, Dahmen has not cashed in over his last four starts after getting cut at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. He is also just 1/3 at John Deere Classic, but remember too that he had a T2 in that same event in 2018.
El Jefe’s Prediction on 2023 John Deere Classic
Henley is in great form, relatively speaking. He is no. 1 this season in driving accuracy percentage and 24th in scoring average. Not too shabby for the product of the University of Georgia.
