There is a select list of Latinos and Hispanics who have won the Tour and Latin Americans in the 2022 Tour de France. In this way, we’ll tell you how they fared in this edition and what happened to them below.
Latin Americans’ Results in the 2022 Tour
Nairo Quintana
The Colombian rider with the highest place in the general classification was Nairo Quintana from Boyaca, of the Arkea-Samsic team. This rider leads the list of Latin Americans in the 2022 Tour de France. He has raced and completed the Tour eight times, seven of which were consecutive. Thus, this would be the 9th edition in which the rider participates. Quintana has finished on the podium of the Grand Tour three times: he was second in 2013 and 2015 and third in 2016. Additionally, on two other occasions he finished in the top 10 overall (2018 and 2019).
This year, he placed sixth in the overall classification of the 2022 Tour de France. He was 16 minutes and 33 seconds behind Danish leader Jonas Vingegaard.
Rigoberto Urán
Moreover, Rigoberto Urán, a member of the EF Education team, finished 26th in the general classification. Unfortunately, he had many crashes in this edition of the Tour. These affected him in terms of health and, for this reason, he has not been able to perform as expected.
His highest position in the Tour was in 2017 when he finished runner-up. He has finished in the top ten for the last three years. This was the first year since 2017 that he did not finish in the top ten on the Tour.
His overall assessment of his own performance this year was quite harsh: “the evaluation of this Tour was zero, bad, the goals were not reached, we did not win a stage, I wasn’t in the top ten. I’m speaking for myself, because I’m the boss of myself, and I didn’t do anything; I tried very hard, but none of the objectives were met.” This was stated by the cyclist.
Daniel Martinez
Lastly, Daniel Martinez has had some health complications. Although he started the first week of the 2022 Tour de France in the top 10 of the general classification, on Sunday, July 10, he began to drop in positions due to illness. The cyclist mentioned that he had a fever and had to take antibiotics.
Recently, his teammate Jonathan Castroviejo had mentioned that he had been gradually improving and that he hoped to attack in the Pyrenees to recover some positions in the general classification. However, he was not far behind Urán and finished the Grand Tour in 30th position, 2h00’55” behind the leader.
So, you now know how the Latin Americans performed in the 2022 Tour de France. Although they did not have the expected results, all three finished the race and reached important positions, as in the case of Nairo Quintana.
