Petco Park fans experienced a tense moment Thursday night when Jurickson Profar was involved in a fiery collision with teammate C.J. Abrams.
During the fifth episode of the game between the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants, Profar, who was covering left field, went for a short fly by Tommy La Stella as did shortstop Abrams.
After they failed to communicate, Abrams hit Profar’s head with his left knee as both of them reached for the ball and, and Profar ended up down on the turf.
Although medical assistance arrived in time, the most dramatic moment occurred when Profar tried to get out by his own means and ended up collapsing.
The paramedic car arrived immediately to transport the Padres’ player on a stretcher, while the team announced that he was being sent to UC San Diego Health for further evaluation.
While the 29-year-old player emerged conscious, smiling and raising his right hand in appreciation to the fans in attendance, it was learned Friday afternoon that Jurickson Profar was diagnosed with a concussion and a vertical strain, so he will have to rest for an indefinite period of time.
Jurickson Profar and his good year with the Padres
In an injury-riddled season for the team, Jurickson Profar has been one of the most consistent ballplayers for the Padres this season.
The Curacao native played 83 of San Diego’s 84 games in 2022 and although his batting average is not very high at .242, he adds other interesting offensive numbers.
After 310 at-bats, he had 20 doubles, eight home runs, 38 runs batted in, a.343 OBP, and a solid ticket-to-strikeout ratio of 46 walks to 52 strikeouts.
This is undoubtedly another important loss for a San Diego team that still has not been able to recover Fernando Tatis Jr, nor Wil Myers.
