Óscar de la Hoya spoke out after Saúl Álvarez’s defeat and invited him to get back with him in a Tweet.
Former U.S. boxer Óscar de la Hoya was a longtime promoter for Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, but they had to terminate their working relationship after the Mexican was unhappy with the way fight negotiations were being handled at Golden Boy Promotions.
Since November 2020, it was announced that Canelo Álvarez would be a free agent, and since then, the fighter from Guadalajara along with Eddy Reynoso and the rest of the team, which calls itself Canelo Team, make decisions together.
Since their separation, they have been banging each other in some form or another whenever there is an opportunity.
Recently, in the lead-up to the Canelo vs. Bivol fight, the fighter from Jalisco stated that Ócar de la Hoya is only interested in money, after the promoter suggested a fight between Canelo and Ryan García, who is currently with Golden Boy Promotions.
“What’s happening is that Óscar de la Hoya is looking at the money, he’s not looking at the fighter, the only thing he’s looking for is a big fight, for what? So his company can make money. It’s not viable.”
Those were the statements made by Canelo, who showed his dissatisfaction.
And now it was Óscar de la Hoya who sent a subtle message to Canelo on social media.
“It isn’t too late (yet) to switch back to the best promoter.”
So wrote Óscar de la Hoya on Twitter. Before the sentence, he mentioned Canelo so that there would be no speculation because yes, it was a direct message to the Aztec boxer.
Will Canelo Return with Óscar de la Hoya?
We do not believe that the blows received in the fight against Bivol will erase Álvarez’s memory enough to think about returning to Óscar de la Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions. However, we must recognize that the former boxer wanted to make the attempt, and we applaud him for it.
In any case, the loss to the Russian is already a fact and there is no way to reverse it, and that would not have changed even if de la Hoya was Canelo’s promoter. Nevertheless, he might have advised him not to risk moving up to light heavyweight.
