Tiger Woods returned to competition at the 2022 Masters, and quickly made his presence known on the legendary Augusta National course by his good first-round performance.
The former world number one finished Thursday’s round tied for tenth at 1-under-par, 4 strokes behind the young South Korean Im Sung-jae, who surprisingly occupies the top spot on the leaderboard with -5.
This is extraordinary work for Woods, who is participating in an official event for the first time since a traffic accident nearly cost him his leg in February 2021.
After the first 18 holes, the 46-year-old American remains in the running for the championship trophy in a Major event he has already won five times (the last time being in 2019).
Joaqun Niemann of Chile made its presence felt with his 3 under par performance, which put him in third position in the standings. So far, he is the player who is standing up for Latin golf.
For the second round of the 2022 Masters, Woods will tee off at 1:41 p.m. (local time) alongside South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen and Niemann.
Masters 2022: Mexican Abraham Ancer had a good first round
Abraham Ancer is one of the few Hispanic players to be present at the 2022 edition of the Masters, and in the first round he performed well enough to make the cut.
The 31-year-old golfer finished Thursday’s round in the par of the course, a score that places him in 19th position in a leaderboard that surprisingly has the Asian Im Sung-jae at the top.
On Friday, Ancer will take the field in group 11, along with Englishman Tyrrell Hatton and American Sam Burns.
