Major League Baseball’s catch of the year may not have come from the outfield. A fan in the stands at Great American Ball Park at the Padres vs. Reds game made a monumental play by catching a foul ball that bounced to his location.
Catching a foul ball may not seem like a big deal, but it’s the context and difficulty of the play that earns this fan the label of “Father of the Year”… for better and for worse.
In the top of the fifth inning of the Padres vs Reds game, a ball went towards third base and landed in the foul bleachers and after bouncing several times made its way to a fan who caught it barehanded, with his right hand while his left hand was not available since… he was feeding his baby!
You can see how the father kept the bottle firmly in the baby’s mouth while with the other hand he beat another fan in the souvenir fight, in a move that stunned not only the people around him, but also to the members of the game broadcasting team in question, who dedicated a few words to the feat.
“Nice job! Holds bottle, no spillage. Baby in perfect bliss,” commented the Padres vs Reds game announcer. It was certainly a play that everyone will remember, not just the fan who took a nice souvenir home – and who will surely have a funny story to tell the baby when he or she is older!
So… How did the Padres vs. Reds Game End?
Well, as everyone thought it would end: the Cincinnati Reds lost.
The Padres scored eight runs in the fourth inning that ultimately proved to be an impossible lead for the Cincinnati team, which fell to 9-6 and continues to distance itself from the dubious distinction of being the team with the worst record in all of MLB. This would be no surprise after the team got rid of so many key pieces in the offseason.
The second game of this series between Padres vs. Reds will be played this April 27, and while the Padres are looking to continue adding so as to put themselves in contention for the National League West division lead, the Reds will be content to continue improving on a record of only one win in their last ten games.
