Sterling has been ruthlessly blowing away his competition in the bantamweight division. He has proven over and over again that he’s THE GUY in the weight class, especially ever since won the title in 2021. Sterling has defended his belt a total of three times already, the latest being a split decision victory over Henry Cejudo in Aljamain Sterling UFC 288: Sterling vs. Cejudo.
It’s clear that Sterling has the advantage in wrestling and grappling over O’Malley. Sterling has eight wins by way of submission and hasn’t been submitted in his career. The former two-time NCAA Division III All-American is averaging 2.02 takedowns per 15 minutes in the UFC. He can mix it up standing up, too. Sterling has a 3-1 T/KO record. “Sean will be a good striking test. But he makes one mistake and he’ll be on his back. GnP TKO, round 2! I’ve seen it play out hundred of times now. Almost time to execute the vision,” Sterling tweeted recently.

The time has come for O’Malley to prove he’s the best bantamweight fighter. Even if he’s the underdog heading into this showdown against Sterling, he just can’t be counted out easily, largely because of his power. He has won 11 fights via knockouts. Nine of his victories saw opponents not make it to the second round.
Interestingly enough, his last fight ended in a split decision victory in his favor against Yan back in October. O’Malley mixes up his striking so well and that was very much evident in the Yan fight in which he peppered him with a variety of punches, elbows, and kicks. When he gets it going, he can really spell trouble for Sterling. O’Malley is averaging 7.43 landed strikes per minute to just 4.78 by Sterling. Add to that the fact that O’Malley lands 95 percent of his strikes while standing up. He will look to keep this fight away from the ground as much as possible. To that end, he will have to rely on his takedown defense which has a 60 percent success rate in the UFC.
El Jefe’s Prediction on Aljamain Sterling vs Sean O Malley
This is the crowning moment of Sean O’Malley’s career. At one point in the bout, O’Malley will nail Sterling with a great combo and he’d take over from there.
Prediction:
O’Malley wins via KO.
