Ranked third in the middleweight division, Vettori has a chance to see a title shot land on his lap again sometime in the future. That’s why expect him to go all out this week when he shares the Octagon with Cannonier. Vettori is coming off a dominant victory over Roman Dolidze via a three-round unanimous decision at UFC 268 last March to successfully rebound from a loss to Robert Whittaker last September.
The 29-year-old Vettori does seem to have little to zero issues at all when his cardio gets tested in fights, as evidenced by the fact that all of his six fights went the distance. That stretch, of course, includes his unanimous decision loss to Israel Adesanya in a title fight back in 2021. Vettori relies more on his submission and ground skills, which he will look to use to neutralize the strengths of Cannonier, who’s a striker. The Italian Dream has won nine fights through submissions and has never been submitted. He also has a pair of knockout victories with zero KO losses as well.

Even though he’s close to turning 40, Cannonier still looks as though he can hang with the younger studs in the UFC. He once again proved that in his last fight in which he edged out Sean Strickland via split decision back in December’s UFC Fight Night. Prior to that, he lost to Adesanya in July 2022, via unanimous decision. As mentioned earlier, Cannonier is a striker who loves to slug it out standing up.
He has 10 knockout victories, and his list of victims includes the legendary Anderson Silva, whom he knocked out in the first round of their fight in 2019. Cannonier will have a 3.5-inch reach advantage over Vettori come fight night, which should work to his advantage, especially when trying to stave off the Italian from shooting for takedowns. Speaking of which, Cannonier has a 64 percent success rate in avoiding takedowns.
