The Cincinnati Reds are on track to have one of the worst seasons in Major League Baseball history, and general manager Nick Krall is fully aware of it. In an interview published by Ken Rosenthal in The Athletic, the Reds’ general manager took full responsibility for the 3-22 record the team started Friday, which represents the worst start in the organization’s history.

“If anyone wants to blame anyone, they should blame me. We don’t have enough depth to combat this. Did we do a good enough job in the offseason of signing players, making trades? Maybe not.”

Nick Krall on his responsibility to the Cincinnati Reds

While the Reds needed to reduce their payroll after a 2021 season of heavy investment and adverse results, Nick Krall and his management staff did a deep roster cleanup, leaving the roster unable to compete for many more seasons.

During the preseason, Cincinnati traded outfielder Jesse Winker, third baseman Eugenio Suarez, starter Sonny Gray, reliever Amir Garrett and catcher Tucker Barnhart. In addition to that, they let outfielder Nick Castellanos enter free agency and lost starter Wade Miley to waivers.

But if that was not enough, the few interesting cards left available to manager David Bell, such as Joey Votto, Luis Castillo and Jonathan India, are currently on the injured list along with 12 other players.

“It’s hard to make excuses. There are a lot of good people in this organization who have done really good jobs. Right now, we’re in a perfect storm, and we’re trying to dig our way out of it.”

Nick Krall’s moves and the Reds’ drought.

As if the Cincinnati team’s poor form wasn’t bad enough, the moves made by Nick Krall put the renowned organization on track for a long title drought. In addition to not winning a World Series since 1990, in the last ten years the Reds have had only three winning seasons and have only made it to the postseason twice, losing both times in the Wild Card Game.

It is undoubtedly a dark moment for one of the most important organizations in the MLB, which has also been engaged in a tug-of-war with its own fans after, in mid-April, team president and COO Phil Castellini challenged angry fans for questioning his loyalty to the team.
