After his victory in the first round of Roland Garros 2022, Novak Djokovic released forceful statements after the controversial decision of the ATP of not counting the points of the next edition of Wimbledon, for the prohibition to play tennis players from Russia and Belarus.

“So I think it was a wrong decision. I don’t support that at all,” the world’s #1 tennis player said of the British Grand Slam measure barring star tennis players such as Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev.

About the ATP’s response of not counting the points in the event, the Serbian indicated:

“I think collectively I’m glad that players got together with ATP, the governing body of the men’s tennis, and showed to the Grand Slam that, you know, when there is a mistake happening, and there was from the Wimbledon side, then we have to show that there is going to be some consequences.”

However, the six-time Wimbledon winner did not avoid recognizing that in the end everyone is harmed by the different measures that have been implemented recently, as a result of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

“For me, or for the guys who did well last year, not only are we not going to have a chance to win points, but we can’t defend them.”

Finally, Nole made it clear that the prestigious event that takes place on the courts of the All England Club represents much more than money and points for him, since it was always his dream to be able to play there.

These strong words from the Serbian came after his victory over the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3 6-1 6-0, in the first round of the French Open .

Novak Djokovic’s Record and Titles at Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic is a six-time Wimbledon champion

After 16 Wimbledon appearances, Djokovic posts an impressive record of 79 wins and 10 losses, for a superlative 89% win percentage.

We are talking about a player who won 6 of his 20 Grand Slam titles in London, despite playing in the same era as two other living legends of the sport: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

The 2022 edition of Wimbledon will be played between June 27 and July 10, and again, Nole will come out as one of the main favorites for the title. Although for many, this year’s trophy will have an asterisk for the controversial measures generated by the unfortunate events that occurred in Ukraine.
