New winds will blow in the offices of the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2022 NFL season after the organization announced Omar Khan as its new general manager.
Following the report made Tuesday night by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, in which he anticipated Khan’s appointment, the Steelers made the news official this Tuesday afternoon.
“I am pleased to present Omar Khan as our next General Manager. Omar has been an integral part of our Football Operations Department during his 21 years with the team, and that experience will serve him well in his new role.”
Art Rooney II, president of the Steelers, on Omar Khan
Omar Khan, who has been part of the organization since 2001, will be in office for the next four seasons and will face a rather complicated task due to having to fill the great void left by the departure of Kevin Colbert, who was the general manager of Pittsburgh since the 2000 season.
In his 22 years with the Steelers, Khan has fulfilled a number of important roles, and this time he received a big promotion after previously serving as the team’s VP of football and business administration.
“I am extremely excited for this opportunity to be the general manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I would like to thank Art Rooney II, Mike Tomlin, and Kevin Colbert for their support throughout this process. I am ready for this challenge and grateful to continue the success we have had in the field during my first 21 years.
I look forward to completing our football operations staff and working tirelessly to build another championship football team for Steelers Nation and our community.”
Omar Khan, to steelers.com, about his appointment.
Khan will have a great challenge without the presence of Ben Roethlisberger as the team’s offensive leader. With Big Ben and Colbert in the organization, Pittsburgh won 10 division titles and won two Super Bowls out of the three it attended.
Omar Khan will soon have help in management
Although the announcement of Omar Khan did not reveal who will be his assistant manager, journalist Aditi Kinkhabwala noted that the Steelers would be close to hiring Andy Wiedl, the Eagles’ VP of Players and Personnel, as assistant manager to Khan.
Khan and Wiedl were among six candidates who attended a second interview for those job openings. Other finalists included Steelers’ pro scouting coordinator Brandon Hunt, former Buffalo Bills’ general manager Doug Whaley, Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ executive John Spytek and Tennessee Titans’ front office member Ryan Cowden.
