On the day the 2022 MLB season began, news broke that the Pittsburgh Pirates gave Ke’Bryan Hayes an 8-year, $70 million contract extension, according to a report by FanSided’s Robert Murray.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Hayes’ contract may be extended for a ninth year if the organization chooses to exercise the option.

It is important to mention that this is the largest contract in the history of the Pittsburgh team, surpassing the one signed by catcher Jason Kendall for 6 years and 60 million dollars in 2000.

With this move, the National League Central Division team ensures that it will keep one of its best young players in its ranks, despite the fact that he has not yet reached his Major League prime.

In his MLB career, Hayes has a .280 average and .340 OBP, with 11 home runs and 49 RBIs. In the first game of the 2022 regular round, he missed an at-bat.

The Pittsburgh Pirates kicked off the 2022 Major League Baseball season with a 9-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Tyler O’Neill was the star of the game, going 3-2 with a home run and 5 RBIs. Nolan Arenado also stood out with a home run and 2 runs batted in.

On the losing side, Japan’s Yoshitomo Tsutsugo had 2 hits in 3 innings, leading an offense that was unable to score runs on Opening Day.

This result represents the enormous difference between two teams with very different realities. On the one hand, the Cardinals are back in contention for the National League Central Division title, while the Pirates are headed for yet another losing season.
