On Sunday, May 28th, Tigres became the champion of the Liga MX Clausura 2023 after defeating Chivas 3-2 on aggregate score, thus concluding the tournament that covers the first half of the year. There will now be a one-month break in Mexican soccer before the start of the Apertura 2023 season.

In the week leading up to the Clausura 2023 Grand Final, Liga MX issued a statement revealing the start and end dates for the next tournament, as well as modifications to the competition format that will include all 18 teams.

As always, JefeBet has the inside scoop on when the Liga MX will return. Here are the dates you need to mark on your calendar if you’re a fan of Mexican First Division teams.

When does the Apertura 2023 tournament start in Liga MX?

The start date for the Apertura 2023 has been set for Friday, June 30th, while the final is expected to be played on December 17th, provided the finalists have no involvement in the Club World Cup.

This means that if Leon wins the CONCACAF Champions League and also reaches the final in Apertura 2023, adjustments will have to be made to the schedule.

What are the changes in the format for the Apertura 2023?

During the aforementioned period, 17 matchdays will be played and the top six of the general standings will advance directly to the Playoffs phase. The Repechaje, now called Play-In, following the NBA style, will feature only teams from seventh to tenth place.

The seventh will face the eighth, and the ninth will face the tenth. Afterward, the winner of the first match will become the seventh team to enter the Play-In phase, while the loser will have another chance to qualify by playing against the winner of the second match. The winner of that match will be the eighth team to make it into the Big Party and, therefore, the opponent of the general leader in the quarterfinals.

The Apertura 2023 on a par with the Leagues Cup

The Leagues Cup is the tournament that will feature teams from Liga MX and MLS. It will take place between July 21st and August 19th, three weeks after the Mexican tournament kicks off.

Although the Apertura 2023 schedule hasn’t been released yet, it is expected that the tournament will be paused during the continental competition. This could lead to a congested Mexican soccer calendar in September and October, with multiple double matchdays to balance and reach the chosen end date.

In the next few days, more information about the Apertura 2023 will become available. Therefore, at JefeBet, we’ll bring you all the info you need to place your bets on Liga MX, including the possible winner of the next tournament.
