Liga MX determined that after what happened in the Querétaro vs Atlas match, the visiting fans will not be allowed access to other stadiums.
Last Saturday, March 5, Mexican soccer was in the spotlight, but not for anything to do with sports, but for an act of extreme violence during the Querétaro vs Atlas match, corresponding to Matchday 9 of La Liga MX, at La Corregidora stadium.
Querétaro fans moved to the area of the field where Atlas fans were, and the fight began, which made no distinction of gender or age, as children, women, men and older adults had to run for protection in the face of what was happening in the stands. The match was suspended when the red-and-black team was leading 0-1, due to the invasion of the field by the fans who were trying to escape.
It was a day that stained Mexican soccer and Liga MX made the decision to suspend the remainder of Date 9.
On Sunday, Querétaro state governor Mauricio Kuri said that of the 26 people who required hospitalization, three have been discharged, three were in serious condition, 10 are in delicate condition and the other 10 are not serious.
Liga MX president Mikel Arriola announced on Sunday that: “As of today, visiting fans will not be allowed to attend stadiums”.
On Monday, he announced that the activity will resume for Matchday 10: “Yes, there will be a Matchday 10”. “We have solved this problem with sanctions and security reinforcement measures, and we continue with our days, with our games, with all the emphasis on security”.
In addition, Arriola asked the fans to have confidence: “I am very active in asking people to have confidence in soccer and that we continue with our journey and with this World Cup year”.
This Tuesday there will be another meeting where they will discuss the sanctions to be taken against the violent groups, but he assured that they are looking for the sanctions to be exemplary: “We have to resolve as a soccer game this week, first the sanctions and then the measures to close the space to these violent groups, and then go ahead with that decision, with the implementation so that this does not happen again. I insist, two things have to happen this week: exemplary sanctions and having a very clear route”.
FIFA issued a statement on the disturbances at the Querétaro vs Atlas match and described it as “unacceptable and intolerable”. “FIFA joins the Mexican Football Association and Concacaf in condemning this barbaric incident and encouraging the local authorities to bring swift justice to those responsible.”
So far, the Querétaro vs Atlas match still does not have a rescheduled resumption date.
